The opportunity - Te tūranga
As the Opinion & Explainer Editor you will commission, write and edit opinion and analysis pieces, explainers and other content that adds context to our digital news coverage. You'll be reporting to the Commissioning and Longform Editor and will also work with the Executive Producer, 1News.co.nz, the Digital News Editor, the Head of Re:News, the Social Media Lead and the General Manager, Digital News and Content. You will love working with journalists, producers and editors from across News and Current affairs.
- Look for ways to add context to the news coverage of 1news.co.nz and liaise with wider digital news team as to whether these will dovetail with daily plans
- Commission and edit opinion and analysis from staff and external contributors
- Commission staff to produce timelines, explainers or other content that adds context to news stories we see as editorially important and of interest to our audience. You'll also edit this content
- Write timelines, explainers and other context pieces that add value to the digital news coverage
- Ensure content is legally and editorially sound
- Ensure all content is produced to reach the largest audience, by optimising headlines, summaries, top lines, thumbnails and videos
- Look for ways to use content on other platforms, including TV and social media
What we're looking for - Tā mātou e kimi nei
- Experienced journalist, who has a very strong track record of coming up with great ideas and producing compelling, clean copy that resonates with the audience.
- Strong editorial skills and be able to support people to think through an idea and then write compelling, concise copy. When it's all gone wrong, you'll know how to save a piece by restructuring, re-writing or cutting.
- You will love and understand digital news, digital audiences and digital metrics.
- Ability to work with others and feel comfortable giving direction and feedback to journalists and contributors.
- You will be clued up about who the country's experts are in different areas and who among them will write opinion pieces
- Exceptional team player, willing to contribute your ideas and knowledge.
- You will have high editorial standards and a solid understanding of media law
